Forget the italian lakes, the German lakes are spectacular. They are just as beautiful but more peaceful and except for the German food (ugh) a much better holiday. Fortunately there are Italian and French restaurants!
Tegernsee and the surrounding towns are around the lake, there's an excellent ferry service and wonderful walking. There's skiing in winter of all types and water sports in summer. It's an hour by train from Munich which is a lovely journey or much the same by car.
I highly recommend a visit.

I have visited Mont Mare twice: once solo for two hours during a warm, sunny afternoon, and once at night for four hours during a snow shower. Neither visit was long enough. From now on, I will purchase a day pass. This friendly, beautiful, well-run facility is accurately described in their website. It's a great place to detach from your busy routine and recharge. Whether you're in a sauna with windows, in a hot tub or pool, hanging around outdoors, or lounging on a plush seat indoors, you can enjoy picturesque views of the lake and Mountains, and at night, watch submerged lights cycle through many colors. Not to be missed are the boat sauna, and the Kelo sauna, which offers a variety of sensory delights along with a touch of theater. (Check the schedule.) Do not bring a camera to this fully co-ed, social facility. Do bring shower shoes, two towels: one for sitting on and one for drying yourself after you shower. Unless you have a thick bathrobe with a hood, rent one. Bring a water bottle, but leave it in your locker/cubby; no one brings bottles into the saunas. You can use your credit card, but have some cash on hand as well. Enjoy!

It seems that only the locals know about this amazing place. The Cathedral is most beautiful and the restaurant just outside the main doors serves delicious food and drinks. All this against the backdrop of Bavaria's most beautiful lake.

The museum gives a good overview of the work of this artist, who moved to Germany and finally to Tegernsee in the first decades of the 20th century. There is also a room with pieces of art of local artists. Furthermore many pictures and a movie give insights in the life of Olaf. The museum is rather small and can easily be visited within 1-1,5 hours.
