There are many Cathedrals in Sao Joao, this is one of the top ones to visit if you appreciate old archetecture. Just two blocks off the main street.

This is another fine example of colonial architecture on the church tour of Sao Joao del Rei. If you have a chance to see a big event like a wedding or Easter celebration here don't miss it. Great pomp and circumstance. At night the front of the church is illuminated, but it needs some burned bulbs replaced to once more achieve it's full pictorial potential. The garden in front of the church has incredibly tall royal palm trees. A big wind took one out recently and there is talk of disease among others, as they reach full maturity. I guess it's just old age catching up.

Just beautiful. I believe this is the best spot in Sao Joao del Rei. I recommendo to visit it in the morning to take pictures. Some private tour guides are waiting for tourists in the park in front of the church but some of them are very good so it's worth having citiy tour with them. They say they normally would charge R$100 for 2 hours' guide but you can negoiate.

There are beautiful houses, streets, churces and local craft shops. Once there, see the street of fallen houses ( rua casas caídas).

The small cemetery at the back of Igreja Sao Francisco in Sao Joao del Rei is filled with massive mausoleums and walls full of memorial cubbyholes. If you wonder how to find Tancredo´s final resting place just follow the yellow arrows painted on the ground. They will lead you right to a splendid grey granite sarcophagus with raised polished brass letters on his and his wife´s graves, under the smiling gaze of St. Bartholemew enclosed in a marble arch and in the process of releasing the doves of peace. It is a beautiful and honorable final resting place for the man who was almost president of a democratic Brazil in 1985.

If you are going to Ouro Preto, I strongly recommend you to stop in this town prior to your final destination. It is very well preserved, the churches are amazing and you can simply walk and get lost in its little cobble stones without any safety issues.

Valem as lindas fotos.
