You get a sense of history from the top of the church tower- from the work of vauban and his star shaped defensive bastions to a time when the musketeers were very much part of the history of the area. The stairs are stone to begin with then wooden and it's narrow and you can bash your head and you go past the bell- I went past as it struck- schoolboy error. Well worth the couple of euros entry.

This must be one of the most photographed spots in western France. As you drive by you cannot ignore the areas of brilliantly coloured poppies with the ruined abbey as a back drop. If you walk into the poppies it can be quite a psychedelic experience - takes you back...

We cycled around the area and popped into St Martins late morning in July. It was heaving with day trippers that had taken the boat from La Rochelle. Far too busy, but when we returned later in the afternoon, peace had been restored and the gorgeous back streets and harbour area could be explored in peace.
The place to be seen.

Really loved the jam in this place - they have a tasting tray which helps you narrow down your choices - at these prices you cant buy them all 430g = 9.70 euros = approx £7.00 !! However, customer service is restricted - if there isn't a taster for the one you are interested in - too bad. And please don't look through the window so helpfully placed to see the production... the lady will close the blinds on you! Totally bizarre, but maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe better to buy from one of the distributors on the island.

Lovely market with a good range of yummy produce & welcoming atmosphere. We picked up some lovely bread, goat's cheese, saucisson & raspberries for a picnic on the beach and enjoyed chatting with the stall holders who were very kind & friendly and helped us practice our terrible French :)

A stroll around the harbour and on to this fabulous Citadelle, makes for a great walk - especially in the evening when it is quieter.
Great views in all directions. A magnificent site in a lively town.
Parking by the harbour is free every day for ONE HOUR (ticket from the machine) But you will need a code (from your hotel) to enter the town as there is a barrier.
After that you can get a day ticket for €15 ,which is cheaper than the tickets for the out of town parking (and more convenient) - if you can get a space. I would assume this can be difficult in high summer.

Pierre-Emmanuel and Aurélien really looked after us. Our kids aren’t independent cyclists yet, and Pierre-E took time to talk through what they could handle, and let them each try out a few different bikes before we settled on a “tagalong” attachment instead. Reasonable prices as well.

We were the only people in this charming museum on a sunny morning in August. A great shame: a fascinating insight into a place with a surprising amount of history. Beautiful garden too.

We used Tout a Velo mainly as they had availability for an electric bike and their website was easy to use. Although we arrived on a Saturday in high season we picked up our bikes in about 5 minutes of arrival. We had one regular bike with a pull along and an electric bike with a trailer for our youngest. Baskets are supplied free of charge as well as locks. Bikes also came with lights but we didn't need to use them. Returning was very quick also and although our trailer had lost a small attachment, the guys weren't bothered. We've rented better and newer bikes on the island but as the whole process was so easy and hassle free and the value so good, we were very happy with our choice. Recommended.
