Canons Ashby

This is the National Trust at its very best. A house preserved as it was last lived in, plus an ancient priory church. No trashy 'attractions' - just a real experience of how life was lived by the Dryden family over many centuries. Delightful volunteers, cheery little café, successful secondhand bookshop with a vast selection of reasonably-priced volumes which last year raised £15,000 for a buggy. Lovely garden too. A tranquil and often overlooked corner of the country. Try and visit and quiet times to appreciate fully.

Heart of the Shires Shopping Village

Reviewed By Caroline B - Chichester, United Kingdom

Just called in here last week when visiting relatives in Leicestershire.
It somehow, always reminds me of 'The Hobbits' with the title 'Heart of The Shires!' Nice countryside around here on the A5 with the motorway running adjacent.
Quite a range of interesting shops, and a good place to visit around Christmas time. We encountered a group of Carol Singers outside and stopped to listen to them.
Plenty of space to park your cars!

This is in part of the old armaments building on the first floor and is a new venture so a lot of the book shelves are empty or part filled - but due to its huge size there are still a large amount of books available to choose from.
The owner is friendly and very helpful and deserves success!
Only used books are sold - and this is part of its charm.

A bit off the main drag but well known to locals.
As the woodland is old it has fabulous displays of bluebells and there are also wood anemones and stitchworts.
If you are lucky you may find a rare wild daffodil.
The woods are on quiet country roads and also there are fields with rights of way adjacent so you can construct a really good walk.

This is a delightful little pocket park. There are a couple of ponds here, a bog garden, a bird hide, and plenty of other mini attractions. It`s nice to walk along the stream here, or just to sit and relax in the picnic area. There`s plenty of open space too, and my young son likes to come here and burn off some energy!

Visited following a recommendation but found the farm to be very tatty and run down and thought it rather cruel to keep lambs separated from their mothers with no water nearby! Felt like a money making scheme with not a lot of care or thought for the poor lambs, wouldn't recommend.

Well worth a visit - old WW1 ordnance depot.
Nearly all the original buildings are still standing and these are occupied by a variety of businesses including a great antiques complex.
Snacks and drinks are available at the book shop area.
The disused arm of the canal is now a haven for wildlife and is very attractive.
