Orquigonia

Reviewed By kayak-atitlan - Lake Atitlan

This was not my first visit, but the place has changed and improved over the years. In the previous days the orchid collection was in a greenhouse. Now the flowers are in a more natural environment, and placed along paved walkways. The well trained guides are eager to share a wealth of information about all things orchids. A must see for orchid and flower lovers.

Biotopo del Quetzal

Reviewed By tellatraveltale - Bangalore

We were very excited about the visit to the Biotopo and hoped to spot a Quetzal. But spotting Quetzals are as rare as winning a lottery! This is something that we learnt after going there.
We chose to walk the shorter loop of 2 miles. It is a nice hike through the preserved forest area, many ferns dominate the landscape, some are so huge that they could be mistaken for a tree. But besides a nature hike there isn't anything which is exceptional about this Biosphere. If you have an avid interest in nature walks and plants then it is a good way to enjoy the local flora.
If one is short on time then this destination can be skipped.

Grutas del Rey Marcos

Reviewed By Veronica660 - New Jersey

The caves are wet, the path is rocky and sometimes very tight. The tour guide provided me with rain boots and a miner’s helmet with an attached flashlight. I was the only one on the tour on this day, and this was somewhat unsettling. This was the second cave that I explored on this trip to Guatemala and both were very interesting, and a bit scary but beautiful to behold. Exploring the cave challenged my flexibility and willingness to enter a dark place, but I wanted to confront my fear, so I summoned up my courage and went in. The cave is considered sacred and if you are willing to believe, you will be able to feel the energy. I chose to embrace the unique beauty and mystery of the cave. Now, I know to take my own head lights ... If their flashlight fails, you have a backup.it would be a good idea to have a back-up.

Parque Nacional Grutas de Lanquin

Reviewed By ExpatAntigua - Guatemala

The caves in Lanquin were part of a tour I took, but we didn't realize, so we didn't bring flashlights. The guide had one, but we were all given candles. It made for a very interesting trek through the caves. It felt like we'd gone back a few decades!
The rocks in the cave are slippery and there is bat guano everywhere, so take along hand sanitizer. There are railings to help you get past the steepest parts. It's best to go with a guide so he can show you the various formations, like a turtle, tiger and cacao pod within the cave.
We only did the most direct route to the sacred place where Mayans still hold their rituals, but there are apparently many more routes to take. Some members of our party found it difficult to get up and down the steps, however, so we didn't do the other areas of the caves.
I personally really enjoyed the trip and found it fascinating to enter a space where Mayans have been going for hundreds of years. Might not be for small children, but definitely worth checking out.

Cuevas de B'omb'il Pek y Jul Iq'

Reviewed By nbcaudill - Raleigh, North Carolina

The tour includes a short hike up to Jul Iq Cave, following another short hike to Bombil Pek Cave. The first cave is very, very muddy. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes (that will not slip off into the mud) and comfortable clothing. Bring a flashlight to use in the cave, as you will experience total darkness. The second excursion includes a long rappel down into the cave. It is safest to wear closed toed shoes. The park will provide the equipment needed to complete the rappel. There is also an option to go river tubing following the caves. I recommend bringing water shoes to take tubing, as the rocks are sharp and can cut your feet. There are showers at the end of the tubing excursion, if you need them. Bring the drinking water and picnic lunch to the park. Overall, incredible experience. I highly, highly recommend this tour! Totalmente vale la pena!

Chirrepeco Cooperative Tea Tour

Reviewed By Smaterer - East Lansing

I visited Chirrepeco with my parents and husband and we really enjoyed it. It was a gorgeous day and it was so peaceful walking through the grounds. The guide knew a lot about the process and she was full of information on the history of the Cooperative and the process of creating the tea. My husband and I work in Ag., so we asked tons of questions and she was able to answer all of them, which is impressive. This is a definitely must for all visitors to Cobán, it is not far from the town center, less than 10 minutes. Just take any bus heading to San Juan Chemlco and tell the driver you want to get off at Chirrepeco (everyone knows where it is).
