We enjoyed our two night stay at the auberge. The room was comfortable, affordable and included a very tasty and healthy breakfast. The 4 course evening meals were very good, lots of choice, well prepared. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful, pointing out several interesting places for us to visit in the area.

Cafe Bistro Lez'Arts

This beautiful bistro serves fresh, organic, regional food as well as micro-brewery beers. It has a patio on the front just beside the salmond’river. There is art and expositions all along the season.

In a converted barn, delicious dinner highlighted with local products - the smoked salmon pizza was outstanding. Welcoming and flexible kitchen, they made to order and adjusted dishes for personal preferences. Try the local blueberry beer - no really! not sweet, perfect with the pizza. After the berry pie (fresh from the bushes out back,) we picked up some of the homemade jam to take with us. Local artisans are featured in attached boutique.

The vegetarian burger (quinoa and red bean) is one of the best I've eaten, the salads were just as I like....fresh, with sprouts and seeds!! A real little gem of a place, great views, relaxed, pleasant staff.....and the local micro-brewery beers were a treat. We went back for a repeat two days later....just as good. Make sure you reserve a table in the summer, it's often booked out.

Our tour guide stopped here to give us a treat. She was closed as it was during the mid-week, and tourist season hadn't started. But she was baking, the smell was heavenly even before we got to the door. Our guide purchased, what is called - Pet de Soeurs, or Nun's farts. It resembles cinnamon rolls, wonderfully gooey.

Restaurant la fjordelaise

Reviewed By RItraveler512 - North Kingstown, Rhode Island

We had dinner here in the end of June. It was Wednesday. Only we and another couple were in the dining room and one more couple outside on the Terrace. We came after 8 pm hostess didn’t recommend to sit outside because of the bugs and mosquitoes. We had view of Saguenay Fjord at sunset that was just fantastic.
We ordered from the prix-fixe menu (4-courses, price depends on what you chose for Main course, on average $35 p/p). We also ordered bottle of Italian red.
The meal started with appetizer. I had foie gras with small salad and jam; my husband had salmon tartar with salad & toasts. Both were delicious.
Next course was soup of the day – yellow zucchini cream soup, it was very good.
For Main course I had deer steak that was cooked perfectly medium-rare with wine sauce, very tender, delicious. My husband had lamb chops - very good as well. Side dishes for both mains were fried wedge potatoes, green beans, carrot and asparagus.
For desserts we had chocolate mousse and pear and puff pastry with raspberries and cheese; coffee and tea. We liked raspberry dessert better. Pear tasted like they came from the can...
To summarize: Good selection, nice presentation, great view, good service and value. I would recommend this place.

Restaurant L'Islet

Reviewed By RItraveler512 - North Kingstown, Rhode Island

We stayed at the Chalets sur le Fjord whole week. On Sunday we tried the L’Islet restaurant for brunch (see my previous review) and decided to give it a second chance. We came for a dinner.
Again we had table with awesome Fjord view at sunset! Beautiful!
This time our waitress was very attentive and made every effort to explain menu. With her a bit limited English and our very limited French we did well, we had no problem. Menu that is listed on-line is outdated, all prices went up (couple $) and there are some changes.
We ordered from La Table d'Hôte de L'Islet menu. For the first service I ordered salad with house smoked trout and my husband had Snails in dried tomatoes and blue cheese sauce. Both appetizers were very good, but snails were particularly interesting, sauce was great.
For the second course mushroom and onion soup was served. It was good.
For third – Main - course, my husband had Knuckle of pork with mushroom sauce and I had duck breast.
Pork knuckle was good, not kind of knuckle that served in Germany, but still good. Duck breast unfortunately was a disappointment: very sick (finger sick) completely not rendered skin, very little meat and a lot of bones. Both Main courses were served with side of unseasoned rice, boiled carrot & zucchini with sweet red peppers and onions. Not impressed at all.
For dessert we had sugar and blueberry pie with coffee and tea. It was just OK, nothing special.
When we got our bill I noticed that instead of pork knuckle other pork dish was charged that was couple dollars more expensive that the one that we ordered, because it is just couple bucks + language barrier, we decided not to do anything about it, and just paid the bill. But it did leave unpleasant aftertaste. I hope it was an error…
Summary: Great view especially with beautiful sunset. Beginning of our meal was great and very promising, finish not so much… The price definitely was too high for the quality & quantity. We liked food (and actually everything else) better at Auberge des Cevennes and La Fjordelaise. I am not sure that I would come to L’Islet again.

WE arrived there on a Saturrday night and while very busy, they managed to accomodate us without rushing us. We all had pancake (of course) and all were delicious. I had the 3 cheeses one and two in our parties had the tartiflette: quite heavy thanks to the potatoes but definetely delicious! With the kids menu, my daughter had chosen two pancakes (well, crepes): the ham and cheese one and the a butter and sugar one as dessert. Great meal!

Some of the worst food I’ve eaten anywhere. I love to eat - all kinds of food. The Tourtière was horrible. (For an infinitely better version, head to Rose Cafe in Sainte-Rose-du-Nord). The version here was a dried, loose, tasteless mess that was as unappealing visually as it tasted.

Ice cream parlour in l'anse-saint-jean, québec.

A little gem in L'Anse St-Jean is La Cabane a glaces. In our stay we went back a few times as a family. There is a great selection of hard ice cream and soft serve with a number of great dips. The Sundaes are good too. It is well worth the stop on a hot summer's day.
