there are small places in Puglia that are the key to understand why Puglia is becoming one of the top destinations in Italy. Cisternino is one of this little treasures of the Valle d'Itria, far from the crowded and crazy touristic Alberobello, still very cool, clean and quaint and in the main square of the Cisternino there is this incredible butcher and meat restaurant. You enter the butcher shop, you pick from the counter what you like and they cook the selection of meats and sausices for you. From farm to table since the meat is only local meat and the flavours....is just yummy.

Very slick service, excellent English spoken. A lovely Terrace and one of the (relatively) few places in Cisternino that serves pizza plus pasta, meat/fish dishes etc. We had the mixed antipasti for two, shared between the four of us - lots of little dishes such as souffle, black rice, anchovies, aubergine, all delicious. The kids took their leftover pizza home to have the next day. The grilled fish was excellent, as was the pasta with scampi. One of the better value meals of our stay, 79 euros including house wine.

Together with a group of southern Italians - we had dinner here one night and weren't too impressed. The quantities of pasta were huge, beware! But one dish was salty, and the pasta was overcooked for another. Then, foolishly, a young waiter recommended we try the fried seafood ('fritto misto'). This was not crispy as it should be, and looked and tasted like it came from frozen. There was also a problem with mosquitos, and not enough citronella candles to ward them off. Pretty inexpensive, but still not worth it.

A friend invited me to this restaurant telling me it was alongside Cisternino rail station. Several hours later I had discovered that there are actually two Cisternino rail stations! Not bad for a tiny town in Southern Italy! However, the meal was so good, I was confident to return. Trouble was that I still found it difficult to find and can only suggest that you travel by car through Cisternino itself (coming from Locorotondo), then, emerging onto the ring road, look for the station signs.
But what about the place itself? I have now eaten there several times and the antipasti is always superb. Varied and superbly cooked and presented. One portion is certainly enough for two mortals. The pasta dishes are interesting and offer slight twists on the standard fare. The secondo dishes probably the least inventive but nevertheless most acceptable and the puds - well, I recommend you try the Uovo! A little work of art and with a great taste to boot! The wine list focusses, quite rightly, on Pugliese wines. I have yet to have a bad meal at this restaurant and whilst it might not hit the heights of a great restaurant, consistently presents excellent food.
I have tended to visit at lunchtime when it can be quiet so cannot comment on the evenings and would recommend booking. An English speaking waiter helps the entire process too.

DELICIOUS FOOD FROM A LOVELY VILLAGE “Al vecchio fornello” (“At the Ole Stove”) is a really ancient butcher’s shop and restaurant placed in the historic centre of Cisternino (one of the most beautiful villages in Italy). Sante, the owner, made his dream come true – the dream of mixing his love for catering with his fondness for meat.

The visit of this restaurant was excellent in all respects. The atmosphere was great, it instantly felt like visiting your family, the waitress was marvelously welcoming and friendly, and extremely helpful in choosing the foods.
You go to a counter at the back of the restaurant, and single handedly pick the pieces of meat you would like to have grilled. These are then done to perfection, well seasoned and simply to die for. Even if you are not hungry, just try a piece of the donkey roulade in tomato sauce .... that will change your mind.
We had an excellent dinner experience at a quite moderate price tag.

What an opportunity! Racks of wines to choose from in the Enoteca and no mark up to drink them. But €2 for .50l bottle of water is a ripoff. Unheard of around here. Food lovely, interestingly different. Starters of local hard cheeses, cold meats and grilled vegetables plus baked were really good. The tuna scottatta really good as were the crispy potato-covered chicken legs and the crusted lamb. My capocollo covered in cheese looked dreadful, tasted good but a bit rich after starters. No room for desserts but they looked terrific. Lovely staff, well worth going.

Osteria Bell' Italia

Anyone who knows anything about food will have Osteria Bell'Italia at the top of their list. Giuseppe, the chef, is an alchemist with flavours and the food is always exceptional. However, I am writing now to sing the praises of the wonderful waitress, Giuliana. She is a veritable marvel, always smiling, incredibly efficient & knowledgeable and, in truth, she is just the best waitress we have ever come across. She deserves a medal - or, failing that, a really generous tip! Thank you Giuliana.

In a narrow winding stone alley just off the main square of Cisternino's historical center lies this lovely restaurant with its long and narrow barrel-vaulted stone ceilings. Food is great..had the wood-fired flame-seared lamb(SO good, & I'm not normally a fan of lamb) and the local pasta orriechiete ("little ears") for its shape. Excellent and gracious, attentive service by Vito..so nice. Grazie!!! Wish I could go back for more.

While touring Cisternino we decided on lunch at Le Chicche di Zia Rosa. We ordered two salads which were hugh but delicious. Each ingredient could be tasted. It was wonderful. Then we ordered the fave beans (mashed) and chicory which was the consistency of mashed potatoes and delicious. We also ordered the rice, potatoes snd mussels which was fantastic.
If you are in Cisternino, stop here for lunch or dinner. They also have a hugh selection of neat dishes and sausages.
