Rock Creek State Park is a scenic park located just 7 miles west of Grinnell, and is one of central Iowa's camping hotspots. The large campground bordering the lake has 200 campsites. Hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are enjoyed on a system of multi-use trails around the park. The beach provides an ideal spot to sunbathe and swim.

My dad and I had a wonderful time walking one of the trails around the lake with my baby in a stroller. The lake view is beautiful. There are guided nature hikes, plenty of bike trails, fishing opportunities and camping. I've gone running on the hilly trails, too--it's a fantastic workout! The location is very convenient from Grinnell or Highway 6, and I'd recommend this park to anyone who is interested in nature or photo ops with the geese (another activity I enjoy!).

Louis Sullivan Jewel Box Bank

The Merchants National Bank building is one of the eight Midwestern "jewel-box" banks designed by Louis Sullivan, legendary American architect and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright. The bank was constructed in 1914 for $60,000 and remained a bank until 1999. It now houses the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce and Grinnell Visitor Center. The interior of the bank is open for public viewing Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. Weekend hours may vary, so please call ahead prior to visiting on Saturday and/or Sunday.

Though we have not been there when we could see the inside, the outside of the Louis Sullivan-designed Merchant Bank is worth the drive off the interstate.

The entryway of intricate terra cotta designs, the upper and lower decor of the building sides, the enormous row of stained glass windows in the east side, the golden columns fronting theose windows...and I haven't mentioned the circular square design over the entryway.

a 450-acre park and nature preserve with a 7 mile trail system for hiking and cross-country skiing offering excellent viewing of a variety of native wildlife species and habitats, as well as a shelter for both summer and winter use. On the rolling terrain of the preserve are to be found prairies, savanna, woodlands, a 25 acre lake, a marsh, ponds, and wildlife plantings.

This area is natural prairie and woods that was donated in the 1970s by a farmer. It is fairly large, with several miles of trails, and 5 separate ponds and lakes. There is a lot of wildlife here, including pheasant, deer, fish, groundhogs, snakes, and much more. The main entrance has a shelter that they add walls to in the wintertime, and set up a wood burning stove (and supply cut wood), so that it can be enjoyed year-round. I have never seen another place that does this. There is a worker in his 50's that has worked here since he was 15, and is knowledgeable and very friendly. Although it is technically in Jasper county, it is only 3 miles from Grinnell, and very convenient.

Brownells Retail Store

Reviewed By IA_Hawks - Iowa

After driving by Brownells on I-80 numerous times during its construction, I decided to actually visit the store and was immediately impressed with their open and welcoming lobby.

The retail store is immediately on your right and it very open, and well laid out. There are plenty of helpful and very knowledgeable sales persons to answer any question you may have about a particular firearm, training tool, cleaning supply, practice targets, or optics.

They have a very large selection of handguns on display to view and hold, as well as rows and rows of shotguns and they are surprisingly open until 8:00 PM on Friday night.

If you are an amateur hunter, avid firearms enthusiast, or expert in the field.... I suspect you already know about Brownells. If not, I recommend a visit as they will teach you everything you need to know.

The staff at the gallery are always very knowledge, friendly and pleasant! It is a pleasure to go to each exhibit; my recent favorite was Kara Walker's work being exhibited, but they also just had Toulouse Lautrec!

Anyway, the staff is always free to answer my questions, and I feel that there is an interesting variety of art available. They even have a program this summer to do art yourself in the gallery, and they provide the supplies! This is a must-see for anyone who visits Grinnell with a free hour to spare.

The course is not long, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Tee shots hit in the fairways will be well-rewarded, however our age-old trees and lush rough are always welcome recipients of your golf ball.
