Lake Kokonor

Probably we should'nt decided to go to the "Inside Lake Scenic Area", but we did. We thought that this would be the place to see and understand the lake.
Well, from there you see the lake, it is true.
Scenic? Not at all. There is not a cliff from where to see the lake from the heights, nor there are no Mountains reflecting on the waters, nothing that makes this place attractive.
The village behind, all new, is as dirty as it had been built 200 years ago, and nobody used a broom since then, a lot of shabby, identical restaurants offering the same type of -outrageously expensive - food, a taxi driver charged us 20 yuan for a 1,5 km trip...
As a matter of fact we have shortened our stay from 3 to 1 nights

Xining Dongguan Mosque

It’s a very interesting Chinese mosque. We visited during a prayer time and were allowed to stand up the back of the court and watch with Chinese tourists there. Came back another day but not allowed into the main mosque itself. It’s worth a visit if you’re in the city.

I enjoyed this museum much more than I expected after Reading the reviews. It contains the longest thanka ever made---680 meters of beautiful, detailed painting complimented by silk appliqué borders. There wasn't much detail in English about the various exhibits, but still interesting. Definitely can spend an hour or two here.

Xining Nanshan Mountain

Reviewed By Ives5 - Fleet UK

We could see the building like a lotus as we were traveling around Xining and wanted to go up to the park. The road up is very steep, and our taxi driver only took us half way up, and we walked the last kilometer up a very steep road.
At the top there is a nice park, and a cafe ( and a drive in cinema - which we didn't see fully ) with views into and away from Xining. The main building at the top looked interesting but was locked up and looked a little abandoned.

Tulou Temple of Beishan Mountain

It was built 2 thousand years ago, and became a Taoist Temple since 1980s.
It was famous for the veranda built along the moutain and the temple carved into it..
You may drive to the temple from Beishan fourniture market all the way to the top of the mountain.. It's one of the best site to look down the whole Xining City, door to Tibet & Xinjiang...

Qinghai Province Museum

Like Lonely Planet said, scaled down in size. Two rooms with some info on the different minorities in the province. Titles are in English, but the main info is in Chinese. The place is hidden away on Xining square because the front door leads to a mall. The front door had a broken down metal construction on the stairs. It appears it has been there for some time... a clear sign the local government is not putting much effort anymore in this museum. Definitely not worth a taxi, let alone an hour walk.

Xinning Square

Its a large concrete area in the town center. Getting to there was not easy its pretty much surrounded by road traffic and I ended up taking an underground tunnel as is typical in China it was packed wall to wall with vendors. The square had many locals out doing daily exercise or taking care of their children. Its actually located near the river and i found it more interesting to walk along the river bank down there

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Zoo

Reviewed By Gillian A - Denver, Colorado

This was a great daytime walk located on the side of a hill with nice views of the city. The zoo itself has large areas for the animals, plenty to see. Near the top, you can take a ride in a bus to feed some of the animals: lions, tigers, bears. Admission wasn't too expensive.
