Stellenbosch Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Stellenbosch

January 10, 2018 Brain Ambrose

Hiking trails and art galleries abound in Stellenbosch, but it's wine that takes center stage. More than 100 wine cellars, most open to the public, surround the oak-lined South African town, and tasting tours operate daily. Winter brings a four-day festival celebrating the local vintages. The historic town center houses the trading-post style shop Oom Samie se Winkel, the Neo-Gothic Moederkerk church, and museums dedicated to toys, military memorabilia, autos and early life on the Cape.

Service was exceptional. Relaxing environment. Safe drive and close to any hotels in Stellenbosch. Host was lovely. Food delicious. Try to go at 6 as sun going down and beautiful scenery. Also tried the tasting menu. Was very affordable. My son had the fillet and chips and loved it. They are very good at accommodating children and offer several options. Do not wear high heels! Very casual.

Amazing lunch on the deck with cheery, adept service. The food, view, and atmosphere were all excellent. I enjoyed wine from their grapes and oil from their olives (and the ice cream, which has a buttery quality) and then we walked some of it it off through their vineyard, which they graciously allow, permitting you to drink in the views. I would gladly return.

The Jordan Restaurant

One of the first signature chef restaurants in the Cape Winelands, the Jordan Restaurant with George Jardine brings top chef George Jardine’s brand of contemporary fare from city to country. The focus on the flavours of locally sourced, seasonal ingredients is evident from his kitchen vegetable and herb garden to wine barrel fish smoker and wood-fired oven. Expect smoky, smouldering country flavours in simple combinations on a contemporary plate – with signature smoked yellowtail, steamed Saldanha mussels, seared ribeye and springbok potroast. The main ingredient is enhanced by smoked garlic, aubergine, fennel, prune or potato puree. A trip to the walk-in cheese room to select your own board of artisanal Cape farm cheeses with preserves and breads rounds off a spectacular meal. Vintages from Jordan Wine Estate form the cornerstone of the restaurants wine list.

The meal was kicked off with a selection of breads from their bakery. The mussel starters were served in a papillote with coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger and chilli. The other starter was lime cured Norwegian salmon with horseradish creme fraiche, and organic young beets. The mains were, line fish and pumpkin ravioli. The desserts selected were the banana souffle, sorbet ice cream and a cheese plate.
The service was attentive. Our friends are locals and the meal was amongst the best they have had in Stellenbosch. What appealed to them was the availability of a vegetarian option.
What would have raised it to excellent would have been higher quality mussels.

Helena's Restaurant

Helena's Restaurant at Coopmanhuijs aims to serve heritage food with finesse, often with subtle twists in the detail, thereby turning the familiar into the spectacular.
