Abbaye de la Trinite

Reviewed By Amber201083 - Toronto, Canada

A beautiful piece of art with stunning stone work, high vaulted ceiling and pretty stained-glass windows, this huge Abbey/church was the landmark of the town of Vendome. It’s facade was considered as one of the great examples of Gothic architecture.
Like many other ancient churches in France, this building went through a history of hundreds of years and survived from wars. The construction was said to be started in the 11th century through 15th century... The laid out in the shape of a Latin Cross in 1060 were the transept walls. It was supposed to be a Romanseque church in the 11th and 12th century, as from 13th century to 15th century the new Gothic construction took place, and the construction went on and on.
In the 1800’s the old monastery was occupied by the Army and things like stables and barracks were added, and the property kept changed as time changed. Now the property was surrounded by music school, museum and cultural centers. Summer Concerts took place at the cloister garth. When I sat inside the church, I really enjoyed Reading the history and fascinated
by what I saw and touched...
There were quite a lot to see if you join the sightseeing tour organized by the local heritage department with the advantage that a guide could show you to areas that could be closed to the public.
Highlights for sightseeing :
1.The Romanesque granaries : see the twinned Romanesque windows..
2.The cloister: Part of the building was destroyed in war and only the North gallery was saved. See the fragrance garden..
3.The chapter house : see the 12th century frescoes discovered behind the 14th-century walls, the painting called “ Miraculous Catch”.
4.The abbey building (now the museum), see the harp of Queen Marie Antoinette, table used in Babeuf’s trial..
5.The minster chevet and the abbot’s lodgings.

As a self-help explorer, I enjoyed more freedom and be selective to what I was interested to see, yet the time to stay was not as long as I wished as there were others spots that I needed to visit in town, so I missed the bell tower and some other details..
Do wish I could come again and stay longer for next trip to Vendome.

This has to be one of the premiere Tourist Offices in France, since it's in a castle in an island in the Loir river - quite special. The staff were young and friendly and one spoke English.

Reviewed By Michel_Louise_2013 - Quebec City, Canada
