Historic Centre of Telc

Reviewed By eilonglen - Ashkelon, Israel

We spent two nights in this tiny but lovingly restored Renaissance town, dating back to the 14th century and established as a water fortress by Zacharias of Hradek. Over the following centuries the ownership of the town passed through various prominent Czech families, ending with the Lichtensteins in the early 20th century.
Home to a mere 6000 permanent residents, this UNESCO-rated gem has been painstakingly revitalized to its original Baroque, Renaissance glory, resplendent in its pastel-hued facades and Sgraffito decor. Surrounded by numerous eateries and tiny souvenir shops, it has become a tourist favorite in the Bohemian/Moravian highlands.
The impressively-ample Namesti Zachariaste z Hradec (square) is graced with beautiful statuary and the magnificent Mariann column, as well as religiously-themed statuary and fish-pond. The square is dominated by the State Chateau at the far end and the soaring, 50 meter Tower of the Holy Spirit at the main arched entry-port.
A great pity that a totally-unnecessary private car-park was permitted to blight such a pristine historical treasure...
A must-visit when touring this part of the country.

Church of St. James (Kostel sv. Jakuba)

Reviewed By folieske4 - Antwerp, Belgium

The parochial Gothic St. Jacob’s' Church with the huge 60 m high tower with two bells (Jacob and Maria) was built in the 14th century. It soon burnt down and in the 15th century it was built again, as a late-Gothic two-aisled church. After the arrival of Jesuits (middle of the 17th century) the Black Chapel, sacristy and oratory were added. The sacristy and oratory were demolished during the reconstruction in 1892. The deambulatory was added in 1737. The organ-loft is built within the nave and the original Baroque organ from 1725 can be seen there. It was closed when we visited. The archway was open to public.

Sv Ducha (Church of the Holy Ghost)

Reviewed By folieske4 - Antwerp, Belgium

Church of the Holy Ghost: (tower of St. Spirit from the first half of the 13th century, 49 m high) the originally Romanesque Church of the Holy Ghost is the oldest preserved historical building in Telč. It was enlarged in 1414, when the town hospital was added, and reconstructed in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century. At the end of the 18th century it was closed and then it was used as a town theatre in the middle of the 19th century. It was renewed after the First World War. The tower dominates the cityview. So the tower is easy to find, the church itself not at all. We meandered through streets, the tower in sight and whitout finding the church itself. By luck and not affraid to speak Czech language, I found the desired spot. Next to the entrance of the tower (one can climb it for a small fee and admire the Panorama over Telč) ther is an Inn with an outside Seating. If one asks overthere to see the church, one of the staffmembers opens a large wooden door. Through the glass one can have a glimps of the interior.

Rozhledna Telc

Reviewed By pesti13 - Hereford, United Kingdom

We read something translated from Czech about this being "open to the public" so we thought, "Cool!" What a view there'll be from up there! It wasn't easy to get there from town on foot - you can drive to a parking lot closer but we thought it would be a nice walk. It wasn't. It was really confusing to walk behind the rail station - once we got to the tower the way was pretty clear but coming from town it wasn't clear or well marked. When we arrived we were surprised to find that it was locked up tight, only open to the public Sat & Sun 10am-4pm at this time of year (September). From the sign it appears to be open Nov-March only by prior arrangement for groups, April, May, September, October: Sat & Sun 10am-4pm and June to August Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. 15Kc entry fee for an adult. On a clear day this would have great views of the surrounding countryside. Be forewarned that this is a mobile network tower emitting tons of powerful signal...if you are worried about your mobile phone giving you brain cancer, this is probably not the place for you!!
