With more than 600 miles of coastline, Corsica has beaches to rival the Côte d'Azur. Calvi, in northwest Corsica, blends French style with Italian sunshine. Bask in the sun on a pure white beach that stretches the length of the bay, or explore the medieval Citadel with its unparalleled views and peaceful pedestrian streets. Jazz lovers should plan to visit during Calvi's annual jazz festival in June.

Great walk to a ruined hilltop village, currently being restored. Wear good walking shoes and be aware that it starts at the town of Lumio just out of Calvi, we kept walking up the hill through a gate and then down through beautiful stone walled path, this part took about an hour, it is stunning and worth it, it brings you back to Lumio, but just down from where the walk starts at hotel Chez Charles

We followed the branch of the GR20 that runs the Cirque de Bonifatu starting the Bonifatu Forestry House, at the end of the paved road that comes from Calvi airport. Our intention was to get to the ruined huts Spasimata (1190 m.), but we had to arrest about 30 minutes before arrival, because some of us were too tired. We stopped frequently and then the travel time has increased a lot compared with 2 hours and 45 minutes scheduled.
But even so we could get a taste of the amazing landscapes of this part of mountainous Corsica: vertiginous cliffs, wherever blocks of pink granite eroded by the wind, forming the characteristic "tafoni" (holes) and sometimes suggestive natural sculptures; streams of crystal clear water (in the highest part of the way we drank plenty of them), also a beautiful suspension bridge over the creek. The path is at times quite relaxing, but for the most part is steep and rocky. If you are not experienced walkers, it is important to arrange for almost a whole day off to make this journey.

Soft clean sand. Turquoise blue sea. Bay framed by village at one end & rocky headland on other. Variety of beachfront restaurants. Railway runs along coast.

We walked up from Calvi, it's a pretty easy walk which starts near the Citadel you just follow the yellow marks or there may be a sign which says ND de la Serra and it takes about 45 minutes but allow an hour so you don't miss the sunset. If in doubt about the route just ask at the tourist information.
Once you reach the chapelle have a wander around inside the walls and enjoy the view but in order to see the sunset, as you walk away from the chapelle down the steps you will see directly in front of you a rocky outcrop quite high up about 100 metres away. Follow the track up to the top of the rocks, crack a beer open and sit on the rocks and watch the sun disappear into the ocean. Awesome!!

Since my last visit they have built very modern facilities including a new tasting room.I explained to Madame that I was par avion and therefore couldn't buy anything but this did not prevent her from giving me a comprehensive tasting of their products. The premium rose is particularly good, and their wines are available in most decent restaurants on the island.

These two Beaches are both in the municipality of Lumio, and are overlooking the Gulf of Calvi, almost free of any urbanization except for the city of Calvi, at the end of the gulf. So the Beaches are not only scenic, they are also very lonely (only at Arinella there is a nice restaurant) and the sea is exceptionally clean. The coast features some short stretches of white sand, otherwise spectacular flat granite blocks, which immerse with gentle gradient in the sea, giving the shore the appearance of a swimming pool. In short, the closest thing to a mini paradise you can imagine.
The access to the Beaches is free. It is recommended obviously an umbrella (and sunscreen).

This was our second visit to the C alvi Citadel and it was just as enjoyable as our first. Anyone visiting needs to be reasonably fit as the pathways and steps up to the very top are quite steep and require a reasonable amount of effort.
However, after the strenuous climb to the upper wall lookout, we were rewarded with some tremendous views out over the harbour and the sea. A walk around the inner Citadel involving more steep steps and lane-ways, saw us visiting some of the gift and souvenir shops located within the old buildings there. We also visited the interior of the chapel and enjoyed that.
A walk around to the other side of the Citadel saw us enjoying views over a bay and the higher part of the town of Calvi.
Any tourist who finds themselves in Calvi should ensure that they visit the Citadel while they are in the town!

You're almost afraid to write a review about places like that for fear that they become crowded. There are a couple of coves you can go to, it's peaceful and only a few people. Lots of fish (and urchins), don't forget your rock shoes. The water was very clear and it was nice to get away from the crowds. No beach bar thankfully but also no bins so bring home your rubbish.
